Too Darn Hot

posted by admin in , Uncategorized

Too Darn Hot” is a popular song written by Cole Porter for his musical Kiss Me, Kate (1948).

The song gained new currency in 2004 because of two films that came out that year. The first was the Porter biopic De-Lovely, and the second was the movie Kinsey, which used the tune because Porter mentioned the Kinsey report on American sexual attitudes in the song’s bridge:

According to the Kinsey report
ev’ry average man you know
much prefers to play his favorite sport
when the temperature is low
but when the thermometer goes way up
and the weather is sizzling hot
Mister Adam for his madam is not
cause it’s too too
it’s too darn hot, it’s too darn hot
It’s too too too too darn hot

The line was censored in the 1953 MGM film of Kiss Me, Kate, which changed it to ‘According to the latest report’.

In Ella Fitzgerald’s recording on her album Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Songbook (1956), she sings the following lyrics for the bridge:

‘Cording to the Kinsey report
Every average man you know
Much prefers his lovey dovey to court
When the temperature is low.
But when the thermometer goes way up
And the weather is sizzling hot
Mr. pants for romance is not
Cause it’s too, too, too darn hot
It’s too darn hot
It’s too, too darn hot

Second time:

According to the Kinsey report
Every average man you know
Much prefers his lovey dovey to court
When the temperature is low.
But when the thermometer goes way up
And the weather is sizzling hot
Mr. Gob, for his squab
A marine for his queen
A GI for his cutey pie is not
Cause it’s too, too, too darn hot
It’s too darn hot
It’s too darn hot
